About me
I’m Chris Owain Carter (but I tend to use the Welsh patronymic Owain ab Owen when in Wales), and I am a PhD student at the Institute for Romance Languages at the University of Vienna.
I earned both my B.A. and M.A. degrees at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität of Munich in Romance and Scandinavian Linguistics, focusing on Spanish and Norwegian respectively, and my work has mostly focused on the sociolinguistics of minority and regional languages, particularly Galician.
My current research examines the language of Venezuelan migrants who have settled in German-speaking cities. The aim is to address the question of which morphosyntactic changes can be observed in their speech and to what extent. The project involves interviewing Venezuelans who now live in Vienna, Munich, or Berlin, and using the transcripts of these interviews to compile a corpus of spoken language. The results will then be compared with similar projects which study Cuban migrants in Miami, USA, and Latinos in Montréal, Canada.
I have always had a passion for my native Wales, and I am currently working on a series of personal projects which aim to publish a completely annotated corpus of the Four Branches of the Mabinogi, as well as a comprehensive annotated glossary. I have also recently completed translations of these works into Galician and German, the commented editions of which are currently in the pre-print stage.
